FULL-TM ANTIBODIES

A Transmembrane Domain (TM) is a segment of a protein that is designed to span the lipid bilayer of a cell membrane. It is typically composed of hydrophobic (water-fearing) amino acids that allow it to sit comfortably within the fatty interior of the membrane.

Its primary job is to act as a stable anchor, securing the entire spike protein into the viral membrane.

While the heptad repeats (HR1 and HR2) do the heavy lifting of forming the fusion machinery, the TM domain plays a supporting role in the membrane fusion process. It helps to stabilize the final, post-fusion structure of the protein, ensuring the viral and host membranes are brought close enough together to fuse.
