FP
FP (fusion peptide) is a short hydrophobic segment within the structure of the coronavirus spike (S) protein, located in the S2 subunit. After activation of the S protein and proteolytic cleavage, the fusion peptide becomes exposed and inserts into the host cell membrane.
The primary function of the FP is to initiate the fusion of the viral envelope with the cellular membrane, allowing the viral genome to enter the host cell. FP plays a critical role in the early stages of the fusion process by facilitating close contact and stabilizing intermediate fusion structures.
